The 2012 Birthday Bourbon is made up of a single day’s 82 barrel batch and aged 12 years. That day’s mash bill had 2% extra malt added to the fermenter resulting in the creation of a more nutty spirit. Once barreled, the bourbon was ricked on the fourth floor in warehouses H and I, where it experienced a balanced maturation environment. There the angels’ share resulted in low barrel yields and therefore intense barrel flavor concentration. After showing exceptionally unique character during a tasting panel, the 12-year-old barrels were chosen specifically for this year’s Birthday Bourbon.Handcrafted by Master Distiller Chris Morris, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon is vintage-dated – offering a one-of-a-kind character and flavor profile that will never be replicated. Its unique decanter style glass bottle is a throwback to the late 1800’s when Old Forester was first produced. Old Forester is the only bourbon still in existence today that was produced before, during and after Prohibition by its original distiller. No other bourbon brand sold in the U.S. today can make that claim.
Old Forester Birthday Bourbon (2012 Release) Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: Reddish orange. Rich and elegant with sweet notes of caramelized orange peel, honeysuckle, vanilla, marzipan and toasted marshmallow oak.
Palate: Full of ripe fruit character with oak sweetness, warming spices and almond nuttiness.
Finish: Long and warming with a delicate honey combed oak note.
Distillery Information
In 1870, George Garvin Brown — a young pharmaceuticals salesman from Kentucky — saw the need for a consistently high-quality whiskey that would remain unadulterated after distillation. After saving $5,500, Brown and his brother opened the doors to J.T.S. Brown & Bro. Distillery and began distilling bourbon. Unlike other distilleries at the time, Brown aged his bourbon, which was named Old Forester, in oak casks and bottled it in a sealed glass bottle to ensure authenticity and quality. Since its introduction in 1870, Old Forester has been on the market continuously, even during Prohibition, when it continued to be sold for medicinal purposes. It is the only bourbon continuously distilled and marketed by the founding family before, during and after Prohibition.
